My Lord,

261

Hongkong, 24th February 1884

Her Majesty's Minister at Peking has forwarded to me confidentially, for the information of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce in this Colony, a copy of the Treaty which, as Her Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary to the King of Korea, he has recently concluded on behalf of the Queen's Government with the King of that Country.

Sir Harry Parkes requests that the opinion of the Committee on the terms of the new Treaty may be communicated to your Lordship forthwith.

I have therefore the honour to acquaint your Lordship that the Committee regards with great satisfaction the Treaty, not only as a whole but also subject to certain representations.

The Right Honourable,

The Earl Granville, K.G.,

Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs,
